Ocean Road School Sunday Runday

This morning, one of our local elementary schools had their inaugural 5k and fun run. They called it a 1st annual, but we won't go there, it's a huge pet peeve for me!
My day started with a 1.25 mile bike ride to the start, picked up my recyclable bib, and headed to the finish area to help host the Fun Run with some of my fellow coaches and kids from Girls on the Run.

Everyone who participated got a medal and a sticker. They all had so much fun, it was so cute!

After a 30 minute break, it was time to line up for the 5k. The course was through the neighborhood surrounding the school, very shady, and very well marked. At each half mile mark, whether planned or coincidence, was a family with their hose or sprinkler facing the street for us to run through. It was amazing, and very much needed. The water  stops were at each mile mark and manned by Daisy Girl Scouts. The cuteness was overflowing.
The only complaint was the locals, and this was not the fault of the race directors. At least 5 drivers were out on the course, and not all of them were concerned about the runners. It was very rude, and very unnecessary.
I look forward to next year's event!

No Spartan? Staying Active Anyway!

Today I'm supposed to be running Spartan with Gigi from Running on Candy. My legs have been so heavy lately, and the Tuxedo Spartan is so hilly, that I decided to defer and stay on the safe side. NYC marathon is way more important!
What to do instead? Help the hubs with our backyard paver project!

Let's be honest, the hubs is doing the hard part. He is laying down the sand and the bricks, which is very precise and would make me insane. I am delivering the bricks. Some of them are right next to the patio, and some are around the opposite side of the house, so I am getting my steps in. I even did some shoulder presses and triceps extensions while I walked the bricks over. It's how I roll.
Have you ever laid paver stones at your own house?

Thursday Thoughts on Laziness

I have been so lazy lately.
For real, I get up in the morning and play Bingo on my iPad for about two hours, do the laundry and the dishes, and then go to work. On my training days, I run.
On my cross training days....well, like.i said, I've been lazy.
So
I will be making myself a daily schedule after work today. I will plan in my precious Bingo time, because I need it, and some time for my coloring books.

I printed out the calendar and worksheets for P90X3, since the workouts are shorter than the original series, making it more likely that I will do it every day.

I will get my house clean and organized over the summer and get back on track, so that I can complete the NYC marathon without dying.
Have you ever gotten into a lazy funk? Any suggestions?

Marathon Monday, week four!

Wow! Week four is already done and I've moved into week five.

Before I get started on my week in training, let's take a minute to give thanks for all of the military who gave their lives for our freedom.

Ok, so Sunday.... Superhero Half. This was a hot hot mess, and I went into great detail in a recent post so I won't rehash it. Let's just say I finished and call it a day!

Monday.... rest day. My body really hurt from the hills on Sunday. I rode my bike to coach Girls on the Run.

Tuesday.... my usual running buddy cancelled so I had a lazy morning and then hit the streets to run errands. Literally.

Wednesday.... our Girls on the Run practice 5k was on this day, so I decided to run with them.  But first, i walked the course and left some messages behind. It was a 13 lap course. I was supposed to do strides, but I was still tired from Sunday, so that was a fail.

Thursday.... rest day! Total rest day, too, I barely registered 4000 steps on my fitbit that day.

Friday.... AT run. I hit the luck reservoir which is 1.6 miles around. I struggles with the decision on whether or not to do an AT run, since the Spring Lake Five was the next day. It was so beautiful out, however, and my legs really wanted to run! I finished 3.2 Miles with a 10'34" pace.

Saturday .... Spring Lake Five. I struggled with the crowds at the beginning and never got into a groove. Five miles with a 12'40" pace and I was wiped out all day! I think allergies played a huge part in it. Anyway, this ended week four!

How is your training going?

Jeff Galloway on Running in Groups

As a Galloway blogger, I get Jeff's advice sent right to my inbox every other week which I get to pass on to you!

This week's topic is running in groups. Whether it is with an official training group or with a group of running friends, you can't go wrong!

I love running with groups. My local running club has several groups that meet on different days so that you have a better chance of finding the one that's right for you.
I also meet up with some local running friends to motivate each other.
Having a group to run with will motivate you to keep up with your training, provide you with a sounding board when you have questions or concerns with your training, and will be filled with other people who have the same sickness you do!

Spring Lake Five Recap and Race Etiquette Rant

This morning I ran the  Spring Lake Five for the fourth time. It's a very popular local race, and has over 10,000 runners every year.
This year I ran with some friends, like always. Every race is better with friends!

We lined up closer to the front than usual, because in years past there has been far too many walkers up front.
This brings me to etiquette tip #1. You should always line up according to your current pace. If you plan to walk during that first mile, you should line up at the back. This prevents the bottle neck that I attempted to run through for the entire first 2 miles. Two.miles.
etiquette tip #2 involves kids.
I love seeing kids at races. I love when moms explain races, pacing, etc and I love seeing new runners being born before my eyes. I don't love bandit kids. One dad ran with his kids, who were not registered, and they were zig zagging all over the place, it was so dangerous. I also don't love parents who hold their kids' hands and drag them. Especially when they cut me off and step on my feet. Not cool, dads.
After mile two, I decided to treat this like a training run. You know, one with bling at the end. It was way more enjoyable after that. Spring Lake is gorgeous.
However.
etiquette tip #3.
Don't drink and race.
For real people.
If you MUST party all weekend, sleep in and skip the race. Public intoxication IS illegal. I had to call EMTs over for one girl who smelled horribly like alcohol and was puking her guts out near the finish. So dangerous.
etiquette tip #4.
No matter how long your family waited for you, the food at the finish is for the runners. After 5 miles they are hungry. And thirsty. Your 5 kids can wait until you get home or, better yet, bring snacks with you. Those back of the pack runners deserve food just as much as the fasties. And fasties? Don't hog all the food. You don't need 4 bagels, 3 subs, 5 granola bars, and 3 bottled waters. It was five miles, not a marathon. Share.
This may seem a little harsh. I totally get that. I have just been noticing a lot of really poor behavior at races lately, and this one was the worst. It's one of my favorites, I look forward to running it for years to come. Everywhere we go in life, we should behave like actual adults. Be kind. Have fun. Be safe. Respect others.

What other etiquette tips have you thought of lately?

Superhero Half Marathon Recap

Sunday I ran the Superhero Half in Morristown NJ for the third time. I was keeping an eye on the weather all week and was glad to see that the call for rain changed, but not at all thrilled to see the 81' it changed to. I had originally planned to wear red leggings but changed it to red calf sleeves at the last minute.

I got almost all the way to the race before I hit traffic, but I only sat for about 10 minutes, and still had about 30 minutes until the race started. I searched for my friends and the portapotties at the same time. I found them simultaneously. Just as I was getting on line for the bathroom, I saw my friends. We posed for a quick photo and then I got back on the very long line for the very small amount of potties.

The race was beginning just as I was stepping out of the potty. Yikes. Luckily, they were a little behind, and it was chip timed anyway, so I rushed over it the start and tried to squeeze in among my fellow slow runners. The race was running differently this year, however, and was running towards the middle of the park instead of away from it. They were headed right towards us, and it was hard to.get through the sides at first. I managed to squeeze in and get started.
The first 5 miles were mostly out in the open, with very little shade, and it got hot very fast. I stopped at every water stop, and sometimes I doubled up. The 5 mile mark brought us back into the park where the relay was swapping out. I'm not gonna lie. I totally considered cutting my losses and hitting the road. It was unbelievably hot, I wasn't going to hit my first goal, and was beginning to doubt that I would make my second one either. I was in a bad place. The  crowds were cheering and calling us by name, and I decided to chuck all my goals and just run.

At mile 5.5, someone had left out shorty water bottles. At mile 6, someone finished theirs and threw it deep into someone else's yard. Ugh.
I can't  believe I got this far without mentioning the hills. They started and never stopped. They were everywhere.

Insane.
I really need to hill train.
Between the hills and the heat I was wiped out. I wanted to walk, but I also wanted to be done. I was miserable. We finally entered the park, which was shady, and that was a little better. It was also flatter. We got to run through there a couple miles before going back out into the world. And the hills.

See how red my face is? Not a good sign! After some time out in the sun, we entered the park for the final miles. Everyone was miserable. I was starting to weave. At mile 12 there was the final water stop. After checking for dirt, I doubled up and moved on.
yup. You read that right. I was checking for dirt. You might be wondering why. After all, the volunteers wore gloves, and were pouring from gallon water bottles. At the three previous stops, however, there was dirt in my cup. At one of them, I noticed 2 people cleaning up the discarded cups. One was taking the crushed ones, and one was taking the whole ones. And reusing them.
Gross.
Unfortunately, dehydrated runners can't afford to be choosy.
Just after that last water stop, a motorcycle cop riding by stopped me and asked me if I needed more water. He reallllly wanted me to take more water. I couldn't understand why. I just had water. I was fine. He drove by me twice more on that last mile.
When my watch signaled mile 13 I almost cried. There were still some spectators and they were cheering me by name. It was nice. I crossed the finish in 3.01 missing my second goal by one minute and not caring at all. I just wanted water and a bagel. An EMT was at the finish asking each finisher how they were feeling. I told him I felt like crap but it wasn't anything he could fix, which satisfied him enough to let me by.
The water they provided was in small Dixie cups. Really? It's over 80 out here people. I took 2.
 The bagels were gone.
I got a power bar that was melted and gross.
I went back to the start to check on my friends. I passed them at mile 2 and never saw them again.
I did run into a friend who was pacing the 3 hour runners and she said that one friend left at mile 5 with an injury, and the other finished way ahead of me. I later found out that my 2nd friend was just behind me and made a wrong turn somewhere and ran an extra mile. Ugh.

I walked slowly back to the car, drank some leftover iced tea from the drive in, and chilled until i was sure that I was ok to drive. I stopped halfway home for Starbucks and got some iced tea and grapes for the ride home. I wasn't even remotely hungry, but I figured grapes were mostly water anyway right?

I don't know what it is about this race. It definitely caters to the faster runners, and I have never been happy after I finish. But I always go back. Mayne it's the costumes?

Race 1, Nellie Bennett Fun Run

Today was race 1 of 2 this weekend, a fun run at our local elementary school. The teenie and I walked the three blocks to the start and registered on site. They had a snafu with tees so we have to wait for ours. I wasn't expecting one anyway, so it's a nice bonus.
We talked with some friends  until it was time to start. The race started suddenly, and my app wasn't ready so I was a little behind. I tried to speed up to catch up with my friend Paul, but it was too thick out and I just wore myself out.
I pulled back and just enjoyed the race. I felt slow and sluggish, so I wasn't expecting much. It also ended kind of soon, and when I checked the app it sated 1.7 miles. Turns out, one of the volunteers stood on the wrong corner and misdirected everyone. Oooops.
My friend Paul won for the adults, which was a fun surprise. Week three of marathon training is over!
Tomorrow is the Superhero Half.....

Flat Mama Friday

This weekend I have two races. Sort of. On Saturday, the elementary school my kids went to is having a two Mile fun run. It runs right past my house. The teenie and I are going to register tomorrow morning on site and cross our fingers that we still get a tee!
Sunday is my third time running Superhero, a Half Marathon in Morristown NJ. It's SO much fun, but I have never finished very well. My first year, I ran with a great friend and we had a lot of fun, and finished in about 2:44. This would be great for me now, but not so usual then! Last year I ran with Gigi, who had ankle issues, and I developed toe issues, and it took us about 3:14! I wonder what 2015 will bring?

Terrific Tuesday

Ever have one of those awesome days?
Mine started off with a nasty humid sweaty run. Yuck.
I went to work and the little princess I babysit, with the help of her  brother, made me a Mother's Day card. So cute!
Then I got the notification that some packages were delivered. Hooray. My old Buddy Pouch is too small so I upsized, and I needed some fancy pens for my planner and these from Pilot are the coolest. They use friction to erase. No little bits on your paper!

The teenie took the purple one!
I checked my email and found out that I am a Rungo Ambassador. RUNGO is a cool new app, free app I might add, that lets you record, share, or follow a route to run, with step by step directions! It's so cool!
I also found out that I earned $50 through Achievemint. This is an iphone app, or a website for those with droids, that allows you.to sync your steps and your My Fitness Pal to earn points. It took awhile, but $50 is on its way to my PayPal account as we speak!

Now I am off to curl my hair and put on some real clothes for my Girl Scouts Award dinner!
Have you ever had one of those days?
