Thursday Training Update

Week 2 of NYC Marathon training began yesterday, but I'm getting ahead of myself!
Thursday and Friday were rest days. I pretty much lounged around and walked the dogs and that's about it. Pretty pathetic!
Saturday was long run day with the PG Speed Demons. It was humid but we managed to bang out 6 miles with a 2:1 run walk. There was chocolate milk afterwards and ice pops so it was basically a win win.

Sunday the hubs surprised me with a day out in Greenville. We went to the zoo and then the Reedy River Falls. I think that's what it was called. I could be wrong. It was gorgeous and we did lots of walking.

Monday I did some PiYo and Insanity with Beachbody On Demand. Nice and easy core work.

Tuesday was 4 miles. It was sweaty and humid and hilly and I felt nice and gross afterwards.

Wednesday was a rest day. We went to the mall and then played cornhole. Perfect day!

Week 2 is halfway over. I can't  believe it!

Running with a Training Group

There are definitely pros and cons to running with a training group. I paid for membership to a marathon training group so that I would have people to run with when the miles got long for NYC. I plan to follow my training plan as closely as possible, but I know that won't always be possible, since they are running to a different plan.
CON: 5 a.m. wakeup call on a Saturday morning.
PRO: It's no too hot yet and the sun isn't beating down on you!

CON: not everyone runs your pace and you may end up running alone for a few miles.
PRO: you will run your own pace and not wear yourself out trying to keep up with the other runners. I spent the first 2.5 miles alone. And at the back of the pack. I finally plugged in my ear buds and I started gaining and eventually passing a lot of technology runners in my group.

CON: your group schedule might not match your training plan
PRO: you're not running alone, and you can always alter your run to better match your plan. Today's NYRR run was planned for 5 miles and my group was running between 6 and 8. I ran 6 with the half marathoners instead of doing 8 with the marathoners.

CON: you will run in placed you've never run before. Wait. No. That's a PRO!

PRO: goodies at the end. Last week there were ice pops. This week there was also chocolate milk. Score!

What are your pros and cons of running with a group?

Fundraising Friday Update

By now it is no secret that I am running the NYC marathon and fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy.
My Dad has been fighting for more years than I care to count. He has Myasthenia Gravis, a form of MD, and it attacks the muscles, making them tire easier. After over 20 years as a police officer, he has a new battle to fight in his retirement. MDA uses the funds raised to educate, support, and research, using 74 cents of every dollar raised.
Since my last post about MDA, I have reached almost  $950, bringing me just $53 from my first goal of $1000. Ultimately, I hope to raise $3000. I joined the team after I registered for the marathon, so my minimum is lower than many others running for charity, but that won't stop me from aiming high!

I am determined to reach my goal of $3000, but I am taking baby steps! I would like to raise that $53 before my first official long run, which is tomorrow. (Saturday)
If just 6 of my readers donate $10 I will exceed that goal!

Please consider using the link below to donate, and if you have any suggestions for fundraiser ideas, please let me know!

Thursday Training Update

Woooohooooo this week I began training for the NYC Marathon!
But first....
Thursday I did an older DVD from my FIRM collection. Well, not the FIRM, but a DVD that Tracie Long filmed after she left the FIRM.
Friday, I did one of the Classics, Volume 3. Check out those outfits!

Saturday was my first long run with RFYL Charlotte. It was a hot mess, but I made so many new friends and I look forward to future runs!

Sunday I did a little yoga and we took a walk, but mostly I recovered from Saturday!
Monday was my first official training run. What a mess. So humid, but video managed to keep it somewhat close to my coach's goal for me.

Tuesday wasn't much better. Back to back runs, hills, humidity. Done!

Wednesday I had a training session with Debbie. She is one of the coaches at Fleet Feet and she held a core class before the Saturday runs. A home who took the class got entered to win 2 free sessions and I won! Check out my training journal to see how I felt....

Debbie is awesome. For real. She's a runner, and she trained me with that in mind. Lots of balance, squats, TRX, squats, balance, squats. Did I mention squats?
Today I am sore!
More next week!

MDA Team Momentum and the #TCSNYCMarathon

Training for the NYC Marathon starts tomorrow, as I'm sure you are sick of hearing! After I registered for the race, I contacted MDA and told them that I wanted to fundraise in honor of my Dad, who has Myasthenia Gravis, a form of MD. Whether I reach my goal or not, I am running NYC!
I am $87 away from my first mini goal of $1000. I would love to hit that goal before my first official long run this Saturday!
Please consider donating, no amount is too small! If 9 people donate $10 I am there!

My First Group Run

Today was my first group run with Run For Your Life in Charlotte. I was excited to be training for NYC with a group, nervous that no one would be running my pace. Oh, and the first four miles were hills.

Yikes! It was in the 70s but by he humidity was insane and we were cautioned by the coaches not to overdo it. The first four miles I ran with the interval group, and we did a 2:1 run walk. Fine by me, I looked forward to that 1 minute walk every time.
After the four miles we all gathered together for a water break. The half marathoners were done but the marathoners had a little more to go. I stopped to snap a pic with these 2 lovelies, who have exceptional taste in skirt wear.

Then off to run 2 more. Some ran 3 but this was my first long run in awhile so I kept it at 6 total.

Did I mention the humidity?

At the end they had water, Nuun, and ice pops. I scored a grape one and hit the Starbucks across the street for some oatmeal and iced tea. It really hit the spot.

The place was filled with runners, and we all had so much fun hanging out. I'm really excited about my new people.
Everybody needs their people.

Oh, and since I shared this with them afterwards, here it is for those who haven't seen it in awhile....

NYC Marathon Training

No Flat Mama this weekend, unless you count the outfit that I will be wearing on my very first group run for the NYC Marathon! Well, why not?! To me, it's just as big a deal!

I will be running with the peeps from Run For Your Life in Charlotte. They have been running together for about a month, but I've been mentoring with Fleet Feet so this will be my first time joining them. I'm excited and nervous all at once! I'm hoping for at least one runner as slow as me!

I'll also be wearing my Headsweat visor and my Nathan belt. I've decided to start wearing compression socks on all of my long runs as well.
I will be sure to post about my first experience with a training group as I go along. They have also been meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays but they meet at 5:30 and that's way too early for me. I would have to be up by 4:30 at least to get there in time and that just isn't happening! I can do the short runs on my own! Saturdays are at 6, and I will have to get up at 5,  it once a week won't kill me.
I think.
We will see, won't we?

Thursday Training Update

Holy heck! This my last week before training begins for NYC! Yikes!
A laid back week, and maybe it's a good thing!
Thursday was the Rock n ROLL Virtual run. I actually ran 3.4 miles but I can't  find the awesome collage of me and my awesome air guitar. This could be a good thing. For real. I suck.

Friday I had my pupils dilated at my eye appointment and then a cleaning at the dentist. So my eyes and my mouth hurts. All day. I have blue eyes, which actually stay dilated longer, so my whole day was shot.

Saturday was the Gaffney Peach Festival 5k with Fleet Feet. I miss those crazy peeps already, but Saturday I meet my new peeps!

Sunday we walked a bit, looking for Pokémon.
Monday, another sweaty run. 3.5 miles this time. I got a little sweaty and red....

Tuesday I hiked with my daughter,  a quick 2 miler to take some Skirt Sports pics of me jumping. I suck at jumping. I'm okay with that.

Wednesday I cleaned house. Top to bottom. We ended the night with cornhole at the clubhouse.

I was too tired to shower, so I grabbed one of these. I just got these boxes today, so I'm ready for marathon training. Get yours at showerpill.com and use the discount code prythe!

What I'm Loving.... Mom of Teenagers Edition

This summer is shooting by so fast! The teenie is home for the summer and the Boy has a friend here this week. It's been so crazy, and we have done so many fun things! I realized that there were some things that made life here just a little easier.

Bob's Red Mill protein powders are one of them. Both of my kids love protien shakes, and this little box of wonders has made it even easier. And that shaker bottle is forever in my sink, so they have been putting it to good use! There will be an IG challenge starting on Monday, so hit their website and get a coupon soon, so that you can see what I mean and join the fun! Http://www.bobsredmill.com/get-a-coupon.html

Pokémon Go has been a huge hit this week.  The app just came out and all 3 teens have been going nuts. I'm not gonna lie, I ended up with the app as well.
I couldn't resist.
Plus, now we bond over how I have better and stronger Pokémon than they do. I'm awesome like that.
Last night we even end went for ice cream because we heard that the store was a Pokegym. I kid you not. The hubs sat in the car while we ran around town, since there were 6 Pokestops near by.
Moms. Please make sure your little ones are paying attention to life around them, though. There have been a few stories about kids falling and getting hurt  because they aren't paying proper attention.

The Poseidon Toothbrush from Toilet Tree Products. They sent this to me to check out and the Boy snatched it up. What mom doesn't want their kid excited about oral hygiene? Take it, Boy, take it! He just loves it, and who can blame him? It's easy to use, and fun as well.

We have loved every product we've ever gotten from Toilet Tree, you can't go wrong. Unless your kids steal it from you. That seems to be the case at my house more often than not.

My friend Marjory whipped up this little gem for me. It's a Headache Helper, and I'm pretty sure she uses Young Living Essential Oils. It is such a gift, not just for me but for the teenie. We both suffer from headaches and this has been a nice relief.

Momsanity is a wonderful company that makes product for moms, by moms. The sliders provide an amazing workout and the BCAA powder is a tasty energy boost before you start!
Check them out at

The teenie and I have been enjoying them both!

So that's what we've been loving this summer so far, among other things that I will try and write about next month. All 3 teens are heading to Jersey tomorrow and there's much to be done!
Stay cool!
